Introducing the 2013 Traveling Fellows

Shawn Gilbert, MD
The Children’s Hospital UAB
Birmingham, AL

Dr. Shawn Gilbert is an Associate Professor of surgery in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in Alabama and is on the medical staff at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama. He has won multiple awards, among them the Vern Tolo Basic Science Paper Award and the St. Giles Young Investigator Award in 2009. He was the honored with the most outstanding teaching performance by a resident, and has many years of teaching experience and proves to be an excellent mentor. His major research interests in basic science focuses on translational research to improve healing of bone and growth plate injuries, and investigations on the role of vasculature in skeletal development and regeneration. Dr. Gilbert has spent many hours volunteering with international charities including Cure International and Project Health for Leon.



Joseph Janicki, MD
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital
Chicago, IL

Dr. Joseph A. Janicki is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago and is on staff as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. He has been honored with the Angela S.M. Kuo Memorial Award in 2010 and the Young Investigator-Bone and Joint Decade Award in 2008, among others. A few of his many presentations include Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis: Current Trends in Treatment and Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: Risk factors for presentation and treatment. He is on the Research Committee for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern University, the QSVI Committee at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and a part of the US Bone and Joint Initiative Ad Hoc Committee for POSNA.



Jose Herrera-Soto, MD
Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children
Orlando, FL

Dr. Jose Herrera-Soto is currently the Director of the Pediatric Orthopaedics Fellowship Program and is Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCF. In 2012 he gave a podium presentation titled The Open Treatment of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis Sequelae at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting in California as well as a 2011 presentation titled Outcomes After Salvage Procedures for the Painful Dislocated Hip in Cerebral Palsy at POSNA’s annual meeting in Canada, a few among many. Some of the many honors and awards received by Dr. Herrera-Soto include the Best Clinical Paper from the European Pediatric Orthopaedic Society in Basel, 2011 and Marquis’ Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 2010. Some of his volunteer work consists of multiple missions in Cali, Colombia with SPINEHOPE.

Follow our POSNA SLAOTI traveling fellows as they visit several academic centers in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Colombia; and Santiago, Chile from September 22–October 5, 2013. The trip will culminate at the SAOTI, SLAOTI, and POSNA-EPOS-SLAOTI International Pediatric Orthopedic Course in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Wednesday, October 2 through Saturday, October 5, 2013.
